The present book contains twenty-five articles of erudite scholars who participated in the International Seminar on India's Perception Through Chinese Travellers, which was jointly organized by Nava Nalanda Mahavihara, Nalanda; Jnana-Pravaha - Centre for Cultural Studies & Research, Varanasi; Department of Foreign Languages (Chinese Section), Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi; K. J. Somaiya Centre for Buddhist Studies, Mumbai and Acharya Narendra Dev International Research Institute of Buddhist Studies, Lucknow. The seminar was held at Nava Nalanda Mahavihara, Nalanda and Jnana-Pravaha, Varanasi in two different venues both visited by various Chinese pilgrims. The inaugural function took place on 8th February 2004 at the grand Xuanzang Memorial Hall at Nalanda and the valedictory function was held on 14th February 2004 on the bank of holy river Ganga in Jnana-Pravaha at Varanasi. This book contains twenty-two articles in English and three articles in Hindi, highlighting the socio-cultural, political, religious, philosophical, literary scenario of India at that time and about the travels of Fa-Hien, Xuan Zang, I-Tsing, the monastic life in India as depicted by Chinese pilgrims; account of places like Mathura, Pataliputra, Rajagriha, Nalanda, etc. in historical perspective with special reference to Chinese pilgrims.
